Emotional Hangovers and How to Soothe Them
We talk a lot about the energy it takes to be social - planning, getting ready, showing up, chatting, hosting, connecting. But what about what happens after? Even the best days and nights out can leave us feeling a wee bit tender the next day.
You may love connection and being surrounded by people, it could well be what gives you energy. But you might also find yourself needing a little space afterwards - sound familiar?
Many feel the same way – the very real pleasure of being out and about with people but followed by the very real need to retreat and recharge. This isn’t about avoiding people - it’s about looking after your energy.
You didn’t drink, you didn’t overdo it, you had a great night out, but still… something feels off the next morning. You might feel foggy or emotionally flat, drained from holding lots of conversations, or overstimulated from sound, light, or social energy.
Post-Social Rituals That Help
Here’s some ideas that help you to transition from social highs to grounded reset the following day:
- Solo Walks - leave your earbuds at home. Let your thoughts settle. Notice the rhythm of your breath.
- Journaling - write out what you loved about yesterday, what you’re grateful for, what you need now.
- Unplugged Evenings - dim the lights and put on soothing music. Let your mind rest, without needing to be “on.”
Hustle culture still lingers, everyone still feel as though they have to be “on it” all the time. No, you don’t. Give yourself permission to reset. And the next time you feel that post-social emotional hangover, remember it doesn’t mean something’s wrong. All it means is that you need a little time for you.
